Eating in the diner-no AC

The tall man ate a very small piece of pie, and drank a cup of coffee. He came into the diner every morning just before dawn, and always ordered the same thing. He did not seem to enjoy the pie, no matter what kind of pie it was, but he always ate every bite. He would sit there, alone and quietly, for about an hour and then thank the waitress and leave. After a few days, the staff all got used to him. No one even minded that he didn’t tip. He always sat in the same booth, just underneath the central air vent. Every day he entered covered in sweat, then sat and soaked up that wonderful air conditioning as he ate his pie and drank his coffee. After a few weeks, everyone figured out that he wasn’t coming for the food, just for the air conditioner. As hot as it had been that year, who could blame him for wanting some cooling. One day he came in for his pie and found that the HVAC had broken down, and the diner was stifling hot. He sat in the same place, ate the same pie, and calmly watched as the AC contractor worked on the system. The central HVAC unit was in good shape, and it seemed that all the ductwork was clear and properly sealed. Finally the tall man spoke up, and asked if the repairman had checked the diner’s thermostat. It turns out the tall man had been an HVAC service technician for many years, but simply didn’t want A/C in his home.
